Criteria for legacy tree:
Memorial is for a person, (no pets), that lived/lives in Pearland, or had/has a significant influence on Pearland.
A short, historically based write-up is required for all memorials, to be reviewed by the Pearland Parks Board, and submitted for approval by Parks superintendent. Write-up to be archived and/or put on website.
Tree species/genus will be selected from the protected tree list of the UDC and will be a 2” caliper, with final decision of type, location and planting time to be made by the Parks Superintendent. The applicant will be notified of all of the above 2 weeks prior to planting.
PROCEDURE

Application for the purchase and planting of Legacy Trees available at the Parks and Recreation Department , 2947 E. Broadway, Pearland, Texas 77581 c/o Parks Superintendent.

Upon receipt of the request an Application for Purchase and Planting of a Legacy Tree must be completed by the applicant. Following submission and approval of the application the Parks Division will contact the applicant to complete the arrangements for the planting of the legacy tree. All applicants will receive a copy of this policy prior to the purchase of a legacy tree.

Legacy trees will become the property of the City of Pearland immediately upon their placement on municipal lands. Legacy trees will be maintained exclusively by the Parks and Recreation Department in accordance with current maintenance service standards and practices.

The City of Pearland reserves the right to designate a certain site specific area or location for legacy tree planting purposes and further reserves the right to limit the number of legacy trees planted on municipal lands.

The city shall use best management practices to assist the legacy tree so that it survives and thrives. However, the city does not guarantee that a legacy will survive and is not responsible for the replacement of the legacy tree if it dies, or otherwise in need of removal. For example, the city reserves the right to remove any tree planted in memory of someone if deemed necessary by the Urban Forester because of disease or pestilence (such as an oak with oak wilt or an ash with emerald ash borer).

A standard plaque may be placed in a kiosk at a centralized location to the planting area for legacy trees. Such plaques shall be provided and installed by the city. Costs associated for said plaques will be included in the purchase price of the legacy tree.

Wording proposed to be engraved onto memorial plaques must be submitted on the forms provided with the Application for Purchasing and Planting Legacy Trees. Proposed wording is subject to approval by the Parks Board, and shall not exceed a maximum of 20 words in length.
